Model
Animal Research Center (MARC) of Nanjing University is
a non-profit, relatively independent research and edu-
cational institution. It is affiliated with Nanjing University
in its teaching activities but independent in its gover-
nance, finances, and research programs, referred as special
discipline zone (SDZ) of Nanjing University. The research
inte- rest of MARC covers genetics, develop- |
mental biology, bioinformatics,
functional genomics, and transgenic sci- ence. It emphasizes
on programs in the studies on human diseases using different
model animal systems such as mouse, zebrafish, fruit fly,
and nematode worm. Currently, research projects at MARC
involve establishment of multiple disease models including
cardiovascular diseases, cancer ----, neural tube defect
and the acute infectious disease (eg. SARS). The mis-
sion of the MARC is to improve human health and welfare
and extend the boundaries of knowledge for future generations.
MARC was found in 2001 at Nanjing
University followed by the events that the "The Tenth
Five-Year-Plan" key project of Dept of Science and
technology, P. R. China, Establishment of National Genetically
Engineered Mice Resource Bank, was awarded to Nanjing
University and Yangzou Univer- sity, which was led by
Dr. Xiang Gao. Taking the world leading institutes, such
as The Jackson lab and The whitehead institute, as examples,
the ul- timate goal of MARC is to develop itself to be
one of the leading bio- medical research center in China
and in the world.
The philosophy of MRAC is competitive and collaborative.
MARC is adopting principle investigator (PI) and faculty
system, a competitive administrative system that generally
is used in the developed countries, different from the
current administrative system in China. Currently, MRAC
has 8 faculty members. Each member run his/her own labs
and has his/her own contract with the director of MARC.
MARC also has ? adjunct professors from other world well-known
universities and research institutions.
MARC provides Ph.D programs in genetics, informatics and
biochemistry. MRAC also provides advanced scientific training
or courses to visiting scientists, post-doctors, graduate
students, and senior undergraduates from universities
and research institutions around the China.
MRAC is located at the West to Xuefu Road, Pukou High-tech
Zone, Nanjing, P.R.China, 210093. With the building completed
in June 2003, it has the state-of-the-art research facilities
in life science.
